Neighbourhood Watching is an arts organisation based on the St. Peter’s Estate in Bethnal Green. Built in 1967 the estate comprises of five blocks that wrap around a central courtyard, and since 2002 we have delivered a series of participatory projects utilising the estate’s neglected communal spaces. By involving artists working with residents, and consulting closely with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and St.Peter’s Square Tenants & Residents Association, our most recent commissions have integrated themselves within the built environment and provided residents with a creative input into the estate’s recent major improvements. Neighbourhood Watching has been recognised as a unique model for community arts practise, originating from within the estate and recruiting artists living on the estate or in neighbouring areas, it continues to evolve through a dialogue between artists, residents, and outside supporters. |
